Repiping

When Should You Repipe Your House? Key Signs and Cost Factors

February 11, 2026 · 8 min read

Recurring leaks and discolored water often point to bigger pipe problems. Here's how to know when repair isn't enough and repiping makes sense.

Recurring Leaks in Different Locations

One pipe leak is a repair. Multiple leaks in different parts of the house over a short period usually signals that your entire supply line system is reaching end-of-life together — patching each new leak as it appears becomes more expensive over time than addressing the whole system at once.

Discolored Water Throughout the House

Rusty or brownish water from multiple fixtures (not just hot water, which points to the water heater) usually means galvanized steel pipe is corroding from the inside. Once galvanized pipe reaches this stage, the interior diameter is also narrowing from rust buildup, which explains why many of these homes also have low water pressure.

Visible Pipe Material That's Known to Fail

Homes built before the 1960s in California often have galvanized steel supply lines; some homes from the 1970s-1990s have polybutylene pipe, which is prone to failure. If you can identify either material in your home (a plumber can confirm during an inspection), proactive repiping is often recommended even before symptoms appear.

Low Water Pressure With No Other Explanation

If your water pressure regulator, fixtures, and main line are all in good condition but pressure is still weak throughout the house, internal pipe corrosion restricting flow is a common cause — and one that repair alone can't fix.

Copper vs. PEX for Repiping

Copper offers proven durability and resale-value familiarity; PEX offers lower installation cost, faster installation with fewer joints, and excellent freeze resistance. We'll walk you through the tradeoffs for your specific home rather than defaulting to one material.

What Affects Repiping Cost

Cost depends on home size, number of fixtures, wall/slab access (open-wall vs. tunneling under a slab foundation), and material choice. We provide a detailed, written scope and price before any work begins, broken down by area of the home when helpful.
